Easter Sunday is less than two weeks away. However, the Easter Bunny has decided to come to visit Little Rock a day early so he can spend some quality time with good little boys and girls. Your little ones can enjoy a special Breakfast with the Easter Bunny at the Little Rock Zoo on Saturday, March 30th at 9:30am. If breakfast isn’t you’re thing, the Easter Bunny is offering lunch, too.
Everyone who attends breakfast at the Little Rock Zoo will get to have their picture taken with the Easter Bunny, decorate an Easter cookie, make their own basket for Easter Sunday’s egg hunt and even pick out a special surprise to take home with them. Little Rock Winter Festival of Lanterns
The first day of Spring is still a month away (the Spring Equinox comes on March 20, 2013). So, it’s not too late to celebrate winter. Dark skies at night will be lit up at the Little Rock Winter Festival of Lanterns in Wildwood Park this weekend.
Located a short 20 minute drive from the downtown Little Rock area, Wildwood Park for the Arts is full of breathtaking botanical gardens as well as home to the Lucy Lockett Cabe Festival Theatre. Here, children of all ages can learn about nature and the arts, including visual, performing, literary, culinary and much, much more. In celebration of the first full moon in the new lunar year, thousands of lanterns will illuminate the trail paths throughout Wildwood Park. Warm up around the fire pit while you enjoy food and drinks from Asia, Rio de Janeiro, Venice, Ancient Greece, The Caribbean, the England of Shakespeare’s time, Bavaria and New Orleans.
Tickets are just $10 for adults, $5 for kids ages 6-12 and free to children under 6 years old. They can be purchased at Wildwood Park’s gate each night of the Little Rock Winter Festival of Lanterns. A free shuttle service will be provided from the Kroger Marketplace at Chenal Parkway. So bring the family to Wildwood Park for the Arts for a little bit of culture and a lot of beauty February 22-24, 2013. You won’t be disappointed!

Soup Sunday in Little Rock
When the weather outside is frightful, nothing is more delightful than enjoying a nice bowl of soup. When you can turn that bowl of soup into a way to help children and families, it can warm your body AND soul. This Sunday, February 17th, Embassy Suites of Little Rock will be hosting a Soup Sunday fundraiser for the Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families.
For just $5 for kids, $20 for adults in advance ($25 at the door) or $50 for the VIP Signature Soup Room, diners will enjoy a wide array of soups, breads and desserts from over 25 of some of the best Little Rock restaurants. Soup isn’t the only thing on the menu, though. There will also be live music, plenty of activities to keep the kids occupied, a silent auction and much, much more. As part of the VIP Signature Soup Room, guests will get to watch local Little Rock Chef Matt Bell prepare one of his signature soups off the menu of his new restaurant South on Main Street before he even opens his doors to the public while sipping on complimentary beer and wine. Dessert is also included.
The Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families began their non-profit organization in 1977. Their goal is to give children and families access to the resources and opportunities to be healthy, productive members of society. Little Rock Mortgage Rate Update
Are you thinking of purchasing a Little Rock home in the near future? Now’s a great time to buy. Interest rates remain extremely low and inventory is good. Prices in some neighborhoods have even begun to go up. Here’s a Little Rock mortgage rate update to give you some perspective on what to expect to pay for that home you’ve had your eye on.
Currently, the average interest rate for a 30 year fixed-rate mortgage (FRM) is 3.40%. If you can afford to pay a little more every month, you can get a 15 year fixed-rate loan at 2.66%. While a one year adjustable rate loan is just 2.6% and will initially get you into your Little Rock dream home for less, the “adjustable” part of the interest rate means that your payment will change every year. Within a few short years, you will be paying much more than if you had gone with a fixed-rate loan to begin with.
What is the different between a 30 year FRM and a 15 year FRM? The obvious answer is time. The 30 year FRM would take twice as long to pay off as a 15 year FRM. It also has a lower monthly payment. However, since you are paying more on a 15 year FRM, you actually pay your principal off much quicker. For example, if you purchased the lovely Little Rock area home featured below for the $163,900 asking price and qualified for the fixed-rate mortgage loans above, your monthly payment with a 30 year FRM would be just $727 (before property taxes and insurance are figured in). Your monthly payment with a 15 year FRM would be $1105. While that may seem like a huge jump, you need to look at the bigger picture.
With that same 30 year FRM, you will pay $26,472 in interest alone during the first five years. You will only pay $18,759 in interest during the same amount of time with a 15 year FRM. And, to really understand why a 15 year FRM makes dollars and sense, consider this: if you stay in your Little Rock home for the duration of your loan, you will pay $35,046 in total interest for the 15 year FRM but a whopping $97,772 in total interest for the 30 year FRM…and you’ll have taken twice as long to pay it off!
What does this Little Rock mortgage rate update mean? Buying a home is a smart investment. Prices are great, inventory is good and, when you choose the right mortgage option for your budget, you will be a very happy homeowner. Little Rock Monster Jam
Do you like monster trucks? Does the smell of gasoline and burning rubber signal a good time? Then you will want to be at Verizon Arena this weekend for the Little Rock Monster Jam.
This Friday, January 18th and Saturday, January 19th, the Verizon Arena in Little Rock will be hosting the Advanced Auto Parts Monster Jam. Gates open at 6:30pm, with the actual show starting at 7:30pm. Some of the featured trucks include Full Boar, Nitemare, Incinerator, Monster Mutt, Fatal Attraction and the ultra-popular Grave Digger. Tickets range from $22-$37 for adults (ages 13+) and $7 for kids ages 2-12 (kids under 2 are free) as long as you purchase them in advance. They will be an additional $2 if you purchase them at the gate on the day of the event. Special discounts are available for groups of 15 or more. Little Rock Grossology Exhibit
If “zoology” is the study of animals and “biology” is the study of living organisms, what is “grossology”? It’s the study of all things of all things “yucky” in relation to the human body. There’s no better place for students to start their studies than at the Little Rock Grossology Exhibit at the Museum of Discovery, located at 500 President Clinton Ave, Suite 150.
The goal of the Little Rock Museum of Discovery’s Grossology Exhibit is to teach kids about all the icky, sticky, ooey, gooey, crusty, musty and stinky things the human body is capable of producing. Where do farts come from? How are boogers made? Why does a wound scab over? As an interactive exhibit, kids can get a real “hands-on” approach to finding the answers to all their most disgusting questions while learning how the human anatomy works. Climb the wall of human skin, using hairs, warts and wounds to make your way to the top. Try your hand at surgery by removing organs from a “patient”. But, don’t touch the sides! See if your nose knows scents by matching the smell with the body part that produces it. In all, there are 10 different stations that visitors can interact with.
The Little Rock Grossology Exhibit is open during museum hours (9am to 5pm Tuesday through Saturday and 1pm to 5pm on Sundays) from now until May 26, 2013. Help develop your child’s interest in natural science by visiting the Museum of Discovery now. After your grossology studies are done, you might want to check out the other fun exhibits on display.

Little Rock Marine Expo
Are you a water lover? Do you like boating, fishing or simply spending the day lounging on Lake Maumelle with friends? You’re in luck! The 2013 Arkansas Marine Expo comes to Little Rock next weekend, January 11-13, 2013.
Included in the weekend’s specials are fishing boats, ski boats, bass boats, deck boats and party barges. Special “show only” discounts will be given out throughout the 3-day event. In addition to the vast array of boats on display this weekend, vendors offering boating products, fishing paraphernalia and other marine accessories will be available. The Statehouse Convention Center will be hosting the 2013 Arkansas Marine Expo in Little Rock from 10am to 8pm on January 11th and 12th and 10am to 6pm on January 13th. Admission is just $5 for adults and free to kids ages 12 and under.

Little Rock Christmas Caravan
Christmas is the season of giving. Many of our city’s adults and children go without, which is especially sad during the joyous holiday season. There is a way you can make a difference this year. The Little Rock Christmas Caravan will be heading out to the Clinton Presidential Library on Saturday, December 22, 2012 to distribute toys and necessities to Little Rock men, women and children in need.
From its humble beginnings in 2005, the Christmas Caravan has become an annual Little Rock event. Beginning at 8am, volunteers will gather at the Heifer International parking lot in their decorated vehicles loaded with clothes, toys, hygiene-related items and other donations. Santa then leads the parade on to the Clinton Presidential Library, where all the donations are handed out to homeless and near-homeless Little Rock men, women and children in need. In addition to the gifts, breakfast will also be served to the needy.

Little Rock Nog-Off
Eggnog is a traditional holiday drink comprised of milk and/or cream, sugar, whipped eggs and some type of alcohol (typically brandy, whiskey, rum or bourbon). This concoction is oftentimes sprinkled with a healthy dose of cinnamon or nutmeg and served at holiday gatherings. The Historic Arkansas Museum will be celebrating this 185 year old libation at its annual Little Rock Nog-Off this Friday, December 14th, 2012.
Beginning at 5pm, the Historic Arkansas Museum (located in the River Market District) will be hosting a fun holiday competition to find out who’s nog is the best. Only two winners will be declared and given bragging rights for making the best egg nog ever: the People’s Choice and the Taster’s Choice. Taster’s Choice will be determined by local Little Rock celebrity judges. However, all guests are invited to cast their vote for their favorite egg nog to decide the People’s Choice winner. Some of the competitors include local favorites Loblolly Creamery, the Copper Grill and even Museum Director Bill Worthen’s own recipe.
Egg nog lovers unite! Bring your tastebuds to the Little Rock Nog-Off this Friday, December 14th at the Historic Arkansas Museum. Only the noggiest of the nogs will rise to the top of this competition!

Little Rock Marathon
The Little Rock Marathon won’t be coming through downtown Little Rock until March 2nd and 3rd, 2013. But race officials recently announced that spots are filling up quickly. According to the latest figures, the final spots available will be filled up by the middle of December. That’s up 35% from last year.
Registration numbers for the half marathon scheduled for the same weekend (March 2-3, 2013) are up a whopping 52%. Race officials have limited the amount of Little Rock Marathon/Half Marathon participants to ensure a safe, fun race. They are expecting as many as 13,000 participants, with more than 30,000 spectators. With more than $20,000 in cash and prizes available, you can understand why runners are clamoring to register.
If you are interested in participating in the Little Rock Marathon or Half Marathon next March, you can register online. The cost to participate in the full marathon is $95, the half marathon is $75 and the 5K Run/Walk on March 2nd is $30 before January 1st. Prices will increase after the new year (if there are any positions left). Proceeds from the race will benefit the Little Rock Parks and Recreation Department.
Whether you’re a novice runner or seasoned veteran marathoner, the Little Rock Marathon or Half Marathon may be right up your alley. But spots are filling up fast. So, make sure you register now. It’ll help keep you motivated to stay in shape during the holidays, too.
