It’s that time of year again, folks.  The 3-day event known as Little Rock Riverfest starts this Friday, May 24th.  This visual and performing arts spectacular celebrates music, food and fun in one location…the River Market District.

This year, big name acts such as Dierks Bentley, Kelly Rowland, Daughtry, Lupe Fiasco, Darius Rucker, Sugar Ray and guitar legend Peter Frampton will be performing on one of six stages set up throughout the festival grounds.  In addition to the arts and crafts, carnival games and other festivities that normally take place, the Little Rock Riverfest 2013 is holding its very first Riverfest Cheese Dip Classic on Saturday from 1pm to 4pm.  Contestants will be competing for the public’s vote on who’s cheese dip is the best.  You definitely don’t want to miss your chance to be a judge for this event!

Everyone aged 18 or older is invited to participate in the Riverfest BAGGO National Championship on Saturday.  Team registration is $100, which includes two tickets to Little Rock Riverfest, eight Rivermoney tickets as well as entry into the tournament for two people.  Prizes include a stay at the Courtyard by Marriott for Sunday evening, backstage tickets to Sunday’s main concert and $1500 cash for the grand prize winners.  Teams can register online by visiting the Riverfest’s website here.

Other events you don’t want to miss over the weekend include the Ruff on the River Pooch Parade (Sunday), Rock N Ride Poker Run and Bike Show (portion of proceeds benefit the Wounded Warrior Project), the KidZone, Family Zone area and vendor’s row.  Festivities will conclude on Sunday evening with a spectacular fireworks show.  You can purchase tickets online now to pick up at the festival.

What is dragon boat racing?  Teams of 22 people (a drummer in front, 20 paddlers in the middle and a steerer in the back) race against each other in 46 foot long decorated boats.  Originally created in China, dragon boat racing has become a popular international watersport.  Children’s Protection Center will be hosting Dragon Boat Races in Little Rock this Saturday, May 18th to raise money for their organization.

Burns Park Victory Lake will be filled with dragon boat racers this Saturday.  However, they aren’t the only ones who will be enjoying the day.  The River Cities Dragon Boat Festival brings the fun onto dry land so everybody can join in on the celebration.  There will be live music, plenty of great food, Asian-themed cultural festivities and more.

While admission to watch the race as well as participate in the festivities is absolutely free, donations are always welcome.  All proceeds from the event will benefit Little Rock’s Children’s Protection Center.  The CPC brings children of abuse and their families together in a safe environment for treatment of current injuries, prevention of future ones and the prosecution of those who are responsible.  They not only provide advocacy services and support to abused children in the Little Rock area, but they also bring awareness of the issue to the community.  Education is power.

Come to Burns Park Victory Lake this Saturday for the Little Rock Dragon Boat Races and Festival.  Cheer on your favorite teams while learning about the rich Asian culture.  You’ll have so much fun that you just may decide to be on that boat racing next year!

From 10am to 2pm, everyone is welcome to the Strawberry Festival.  Located at Daisy Bates and Main, the Bernice Garden Farmers’ Market offers beautiful, juicy strawberries for sale from local Little Rock farms Barnhill Orchard and North Pulaski Farms.  But, don’t wait to enjoy these succulent berries.  Boulevard Bread will be on-site dishing up some of their most delectable strawberry dishes, such as strawberry shortcake and whoopee pies.  Kids can color in their strawberry-themed coloring books in the kids area while you listen to sweet live music and fan yourself with your complimentary strawberry recipe-covered old fashioned fans.

From 7am to 3pm, the Little Rock Farmer’s Market offers visitors the freshest in locally cultivated produce, meats, dairy products, baked goods, jams, jellies and more.  This year, many aisles have been widened to accommodate those patrons with strollers and pets.  The farmer’s market is not just a treat to smell and taste, but the view overlooking Riverfront Park along the Arkansas River offers a serene backdrop.  Free parking is available every Tuesday and Saturday during market hours behind Ottenheimer.  The Veggie Valet will be returning this year.  Shop for your fresh fruits and veggies, then leave them with the valet so you’re free to explore the rest of the park, shop the boutiques of the River Market District or stop and have lunch.

Two years ago, a few shop owners in Little Rock Etsy got together to create Etsy Little Rock.  Their goal was to bring artists of all types together in a positive environment that would encourage them to get their creative juices flowing and learn how to turn their passion into a career.  In celebration of the artistic side in everyone, the 3rd annual Etsy Little Rock Indie Arts and Music Festival comes to town this weekend.

On Saturday, April 27th, the Shoppes on Woodlawn in the Hillcrest neighborhood of Little Rock will reverberate with the sounds of local musicians, such as Booyah Dad!, Falcon Scott and the Winston Family Orchestra.  Little Rock area artists will be showcasing and selling the fruits of their labors.  Take this opportunity to find a unique, one-of-a-kind gift to show your mom how special she is for Mother’s Day.  Several food trucks will be on hand selling tasty treats from their wagons, including loblolly creamery, Philly’s to Go, the Southern Gourmasian, kbird and Sugar Shack Sweets and Treats.

Many of us take for granted that there is food in the cupboard.  We go to be with our bellies full, sleeping in a nice warm, comfortable bed at night.  Unfortunately, not everyone is so lucky.  There are thousands of homeless and poor individuals who go to bed hungry right here in Little Rock because there is not enough food to eat.  The Quapaw Quarter United Methodist Church tries to at least make waking up a little more bearable.  But they need your help.  That’s why they’re holding their Little Rock Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser this Saturday, April 20, 2013.

From 8am to 11am, the QQUMC will be serving all-you-can-eat pancakes and drinks at their downtown Little Rock church (1601 S Louisiana Ave) for just $5 per person.  Absolutely 100% of the proceeds will go to their Community Breakfast program, which feeds approximately 150 people a nice warm breakfast every Sunday morning at their church.  In addition to the Community Breakfast, the Quapaw Quarter United Methodist Church serves Stone Soup every Sunday afternoon, provides groceries, clothing, toiletries and other necessities to the underprivileged of our Little Rock community twice a month through its Food Pantry and passes out dog and cat food once a month from their Pet Food Ministry.  As you can see, they take helping their fellow man, woman and child very seriously!

Please come to the Little Rock Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser this Saturday, April 20th.  Tell your friends, family, neighbors, co-workers and anyone else you can in the area that they should come as well.  And, if you feel especially generous, please feel free to bring other gently used items and canned goods to donate to this very worthy cause.  Little Rock is feeding the hungry…one breakfast at a time.

The official celebration of Earth Day is Monday, April 22, 2013.  Earth Day originally began in 1970 as a way to bring a global consciousness to our role in the environment.  Now, 43 years later, Earth Day is celebrated the world over and has helped create a shift in how we live our everyday lives to lessen our impact on the earth’s natural resources.  Little Rock parents can now get their toddlers involved in Earth Day with the Old State House Museum’s monthly Little Beginnings Toddler Program.

This month, the museum’s April 17th class will focus on Earth Day.  Children ages 2-4 will learn about nature from special guest Jane Jones-Schulz.  She is the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission’s Education and Information Coordinator.  She will teach the kids about nature, the environment and people’s roles in it through fun hands-on activities, storytelling and music.  Admission for the class is absolutely free.  For more information, please call Little Rock’s Old State House Museum at (501) 324-9685.

Let your child learn about nature and the environment at the Little Rock Earth Day for Toddlers program on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 from 10:30am to 11:30am.  It’s never too early for kids to acquire a love and understanding of the world around them.  This is a wonderful opportunity to start them on a path to an environmentally responsible future.

The Civil War Preservation Trust has declared this Saturday, April 6th, to be National Park Day.  Citizens across the country are asked to volunteer their time and efforts to help maintain and preserve the battlefields and other related sites that memorialize a significant part of our nation’s past.  The MacArthur Museum’s Program Assistant, Nic Clark, is asking for Little Rock volunteers to lend a helping hand in the museum’s efforts at Reed’s Bridge.

In August of 1863, the Reed’s Bridge battlefield became part of the Little Rock Campaign.  It is also considered the best preserved battlefield, thanks to the efforts of a local non-profit organization made up of Little Rock citizens.  However, they need your assistance to continue the preservation of this historical battlefield.

Volunteers are asked to wear clothes they don’t mind getting dirty.  Work gloves are highly recommended, as the clean up can be hard on the hands.  Since the cleanup includes the banks of the Bayou Meto, anyone with a small boat, canoe or kayak is asked to bring it along.  Waterproof boots or hip waders are also recommended for wading into the Bayou during cleanup.

Any Little Rock citizen interested in volunteering for the Reed’s Bridge battlefield cleanup this Saturday should contact Nic Clark at the MacArthur Museum by 4:30 on April 5th.  Refreshments will be provided on-site for all volunteers.  There will also be an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast available before the clean up commences for just $5.  Help preserve our Little Rock history by volunteering your time to causes like this.

Easter Sunday is almost upon us.  Before you strap on your pretty Easter bonnets and head off in your Sunday best, spend Saturday at the Support Our Sistahs Easter Egg Hunt in Little Rock.  It’s fun for everyone and absolutely free!

For the third year in a row, UALR’s Support Our Sistahs and the Housing Activities Council will be hosting some bunny-themed fun the day before Easter.  From 10:30am to 2:30pm, Little Rock residents and visitors are welcome to join the Sistahs at the UALR Residence Hall Grounds and Common Building located at 3801 S Taylor Street.  There will be food, inflatables, games, face painting, a dunking booth and, of course, the Easter egg hunt.  The Easter Bunny is even set to make an appearance.
